Colorado confirms 48 total deaths, 326 hospitalizations as cases total more than 2,300

The coronavirus continued to spread throughout Colorado Sunday as state health officials announced three more deaths and 246 more confirmed cases.

At least 48 people across the state have died after contracting COVID-19, the highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus, with an additional 326 hospitalized. Testing has confirmed at least 2,307 cases statewide in 46 of 64 counties.

The state health officials have announced 47 deaths, but Denver News another death was reported by Garfield County officials on Saturday, and state officials verified Sunday that they did not include that death in their latest tally. The death marks Garfield County’s first COVID-19 death.

Health officials and Gov. Jared Polis repeatedly have said they believe the number of confirmed cases represents just a sliver of the total coronavirus cases in Colorado, with many people carrying the virus without getting tested.


The state has tested 14,470 people since early March, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Most people who contract the disease suffer mild symptoms, but some, particularly older people and those with underlying health conditions, experience more serious symptoms that can be fatal.
